Walsh Island's Captain - Eamon Mulhall

To have everything he has ever attempted measured against the deeds of one of the great figures of Offaly football has been the unenviable fate of Walsh Island's captain, for Eamon Mulhall is a son of the legendary Bill, the finest Offaly defender of his era, perhaps of all time, and from the moment he appeared on the scene, nothing less than what his illustrious father achieved would satisfy the critics.

Perhaps it was those expectations, more than anything else, that militated against Eamon's chance of carving a niche for himself in inter-county football. Spells in defence, midfield and attack saw him fail to gain a permanent place on the county team despite his club form, with the result that his achievements in respect of trophies and medals have been scant indeed.

Not that Eamon has failed to reap some reward for his efforts. He was a member of the Offaly under-21 team which won the 1973 Leinster final and a year later helped his club win the Offaly title in that grade.

A regular with Walsh Island seniors since the club was reconstituted a few years back, Eamon Mulhall to-day is in line for a coveted honour- that of leading Walsh Island back to the forefront of Offaly football and it is doubtful if any player is better equipped, by back- ground, ability and loyalty to his club, for this task.
