Match Report from Offaly SFC County Final - 1933

Walsh Island 0-8, Tullamore 1-4

Walsh Island appearing in their first final against honours-laden Tullamore were in no way over-awed at Ballyduff Park as they matched the reigning champions through an evenly contested first quarter. John Connor's accurate free taking effectively countered Jimmy Coughlan's goal for Tullamore and then Tom Mulhall's white flag inched the challengers into an 0-5 to 1-1 half-time lead.
Harry Burke balanced the scores with- in three minutes of the restart and after Gorman had missed a good chance, Rody O'Brien put Tullamore in front. Jim Hipwell restored parity and then Tom Mulhall put the 'Island' in front for the third time.
Jimmy Henry's point had the scores level for the fifth time and as play swung from end to end the issue balanced on a knife-edge.
John Connor pointed the 'Island ahead with four minutes remaining, but then it seemed that the challengers were about to be denied as Dan Fox sent Mick McGowan flying for goal with not a defender in sight and Tom Gorman in Walsh Island's goal in fearful isolation. With no alternative the 'keeper advanced to meet the careering Tullamore man, but as Walsh Island hearts stood still McGowan shot wildly and wide and Walsh Island were champions for the first time.
