Walsh Island 1-09
Tullamore 2-05

Walsh Island hosted Tullamore in the second round of the Division 2 league on Saturday 26 th Feb. The hosts came out victorious by 1 point.

From the throw in, Walsh Island took control and scored 6 unanswered points in the first quarter from Barry Duffy (2), Ross Connor (2) and Alan Mulhall (2). Some inaccuracy from the Tullamore forwards in the first half from close range hardened their cause until close in free got them off the mark. On the stroke of half time Rory Connor's long punt into the forward line deceived all and hopped over the bar to leave the score at half time 0-07 to 0-01 in favour of Walsh Island .

In typical Tullamore fashion from the second half throw in; their corner forward slammed the ball into the net to leave Tullamore only 3 points behind. A well taken point from the number 10 reduced the deficit further. Now rampant, Tullamore pressed. A swift passing movement left number 13 through on goal, but Martin Carty between the posts made an excellent double save to deny Tullamore the lead. This seemed to spur Walsh Island back into the game and Tony Kavanagh found himself one on one with the keeper only for his shot to be blocked but the ever vigil William Mulhall rammed the ball into the net.

Both teams exchanged a brace of points until Tullamore finally rallied in the last ten minutes. Scoring two fine points and a well taken goal 5 minutes from time set up a grand stand finale, but the island held out for a well deserved victory.
