Walsh Island 3-06
Daingean 0-14
Walsh-Island all but secured their place in the last eight of the Intermediate Championship with a hard fought one point win over Daingean in the second round at Ballyfore on Saturday evening last. Daingean opened the scoring after six minutes of play with the first point but an excellent long range point from Joe Nolan levelled matters. Daingean took control for the next ten minutes with four unanswered points. Walsh-Island were guilty of some missed opportunities before William Mulhall tapped over a point from fourteen yards. Alan Mulhall then set up William for a cracking goal to bring W-Island back in the game. Unable to take advantage of good possession it was Daingean that regained the lead and the hard working Alan Mulhall got a deserved equaliser. Two well worked points put Daingean back in front again. William Mulhall had a goal bound shot blocked before tapping on a point leaving W-Island 1-4 Daingean 0-8 at the interval.
Ross Connor, after a quiet half by his standard, set out his stall with a huge sixty five yard point. Del Murphy was having the game of his life at full back snuffing out attack after attack with some excellent high fielding and great assistant play out of defence, in fact the complete full back line and keeper were in top form.
With Tom Connor having a ding dong battle with David Faye in the centre this game was still in the balance. Both sets of defence were in top form. Two pointed frees put Daingean back in control until a long ball from Ross Connor was touched on to William Mulhall by Tony Kavanagh to rattle the back of the net for his second goal. But Walsh-Island failed to capitalise and the fighting spirit of Daingean soon had them in the lead with two long range points. It was then the game took a new twist, Tomas Connor's forty five managed to find its way to the roof of the net. Both teams swapped points before a late rally by Daingean got them to within one point but time ran out to leave Walsh-Island winners by one point.
Final score Walsh-Island 3-6, Daingean 0-14.
Best for Walsh-Island were Ronan and Del Murphy & William Mulhall.
